The drama lasted all but five minutes on Saturday night. Even before it was announced during the NFL’s annual awards show, it was reported by ESPN’s David Newton that Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will be named the league’s MVP for the 2015 season:

In no way should this be a shock to anyone. What Newton did for the NFC champion Panthers this season not only made him a household name, it placed him among the best overall players in the game of football.

Having to deal with a lackluster receiving core that lost top target Kelvin Benjamin for the season back in August, Newton put up one of the greatest seasons in the modern history of the NFL for a quarterback.

He completed 60 percent of his passes for nearly 4,400 total yards with 45 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions en route to leading the Panthers to a 15-1 regular season record.

Newton also took home the hardware as the NFL’s top offensive player, making it a clean sweep on the eve of the Super Bowl for a player that has hit new levels of popularity around the football world.
