Chiefs name co-offensive coordinators

It’s not quite to the level of naming a baseball sabermetrics guy to an important role in the front office, but it really is an interesting philosophy.

The Kansas City Chiefs have named Brad Childress and Matt Nagy as co-offensive coordinators, replacing a departed Doug Pederson at that all-important position.

Pederson just recently accepted the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching job.

It’s an interesting concept to be sure.

While Andy Reid will continue to call the plays, he will have these two men in his ears at all times.

Childress spent the past three seasons in an informal role as the Chiefs spread game coordinator. Prior to that, he served as the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator (2012), Minnesota Vikings head coach (2006-10) and in multiple roles with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-2005.

Seen as a veteran offensive mind and someone that has worked with Reid a great deal in the past, Childress should make for a somewhat easy transition from Pederson.

Meanwhile, Nagy served as the Chiefs quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons. That came on the heels of him working as an assistant under Reid for six seasons in Philadelphia.

“We went through our process of finding an offensive coordinator and determined having coach Childress and coach Nagy serve as co-coordinators would benefit our football team the most,” head coach Andy Reid said in announcing the moves, via the team’s official website. “They both have a great feel for our system.”

This type of coaching set up has rarely been used in the NFL. Though, there has been some success with it at the college level.

In reality, it doesn’t change much in terms of the Chiefs’ game-day process. Reid will still be calling the plays while bouncing ideas off two men that have served him well in the past.
