Despite featuring a 1-21 record to start the 2015-16 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers and head coach Brett Brown are currently engaged in “deep negotiations” on a new long-term contract.

Anchoring one of the biggest rebuilding projects in the Association, Brown’s 38-147 record the past three years in Philly might seem like a non-starter when considering a big new deal. However, as John Finger of CSNPhilly.com points out, the coach has received nothing but praise from around the league for what he has been able to accomplish given his circumstances.

Because of this, and thanks to the recent addition of Hall of Famer Jerry Colangelo as a special adviser to the team, the Sixers and Brown are now engaged in meaningful conversations about ensuring his stay will last even longer.

“We are in deep discussions on my contract and I have had amazing conversations with Josh Harris and David Blitzer and Sam Hinkie about my future,” Brown said. “This is where I want to be. To go through what we have all gone through over the past two years and the first third of this year and still be passionate about seeing this through, I dream like everyone else.”

At some point, the 76ers should actually start turning things around. When the young group of top-level talent that has been assembled the past couple of years becomes healthy and starts playing together on a regular basis, this team should actually become one of the most dangerous in the Eastern Conference.

And when that happens, the franchise is smartly choosing Brown to be the captain of the ship.
