Sour Lions fans purchase billboard to mock referee’s controversial call

If you ever want a great way to broadcast your frustrations, then purchase a billboard.

This is exactly what angry Detroit Lions fans did after a controversial play by Seattle Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright, who batted a fumble out of the end zone at the end of the Monday Night Football game in Week 4.

Here is a picture of the billboard, via ESPN’s SportsCenter Twitter account.

Because of the fumble, the referee awarded the ball back to the Seattle Seahawks on a touchback. Unfortunately, the Lions never regained possession of the ball because Seattle was ahead 13-10 and let the clock count down after successfully gaining a first down.

After the bad call was made by the ref, NFL VP of Officiating Dean Blandino said Detroit should have retained possession of the ball at the one-yard line. Obviously, the team would have had a chance at scoring what could have been a game-winning touchdown.

There’s no way to right the wrong other than for fans to vent and mock the ref who made the terrible call. Putting the ref on blast via billboard is certainly a creative way to make a point. The huge sign, which reads “Blind to the bat” was plastered on seven billboards throughout the metro Detroit area, according to Carly Zipp from OutFront (h/t ESPN).

As a result of last night’s game, the Lions are the only team to sit at 0-4 as the first quarter of the NFL season closes in the books.
