Steve Spurrier is reportedly retiring as the head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Thayer Evans of SI.com reported on this developing story.

According to multiple reports, this will take effect immediately, and Alex Marvez of Fox Sports reports assistant Shawn Elliott will be named the interim.

The Gamecocks have a dismal record of 2-4 thus far in 2015, and the program suffered a significant letdown last year, finishing at 7-6. It’s a far cry from the three preceding 11-win seasons, and there is no doubt things are looking bleak the rest of the way this year.

Spurrier coached for 26 years, posting a career record of 228-89-2 at South Carolina, Florida and Duke, going 11-10 in major bowls.
