Report: Steve Smith Sr. has four broken bones in back

Baltimore Ravens receiver Steve Smith Sr. reportedly has four broken bones in his back.

CSN Washington’s Chick Hernandez reported on this breaking development.

Remarkably, his status at this time is being called “day to day,” despite his broken bones. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle notes there are ways he can play through the pain.

There is a bit of confusion at this time, however, as to the exact nature of Smith Sr.’s injury. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network says he’s being told it’s actually four broken ribs.

Either way, ouch!

To this point in the season, Smith Sr. has been one of the bright spots for an otherwise dreary Ravens season. He’s caught 29 passes for 373 yards with two touchdowns.

No doubt the Ravens are hoping the broken bones don’t cause a major issue going forward. However, this could be the reason why the team made a trade early Saturday morning to acquire receiver Chris Givens from the St. Louis Rams.

Baltimore is already without rookie Breshad Perriman, who is out indefinitely after undergoing knee surgery this past week. If Smith is unable to play in the near future, then it’s safe to say the Ravens will be in big trouble offensively.
