Report: 49ers could be ready for ‘something big’ following embarrassing loss to Seahawks

The San Francisco 49ers were embarrassed by the hated Seattle Seahawks, 20-3, on Thursday Night Football in Week 7. Colin Kaepernick was atrocious, so was the team’s offensive line, and the offense never had a chance to get into a groove against a stout Seattle defense that seemed to see every play coming from a mile away.

After the game, Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area said there are now whispers of “something big” coming in the wake of such an inept performance against a divisional rival.

“I’ve heard whispers behind the scenes that something big could happen. I don’t know what it’s going to be, I don’t know what they’re talking about, but clearly the 49ers can’t go on this way. The coaching staff looks overmatched, the players look overmatched and the 49ers, plain and simple, were overmatched against a team that came into today with four losses.”

Maiocco couldn’t elaborate on what “something big” might look like, but it’s clear the team’s brass has seen enough after seven games to realize changes must occur.

At this point, the 49ers either need to jettison offensive coordinator Geep Chryst, or the team needs to insert — God forbid — another quarterback into the mix in place of Kaepernick. The embattled fifth-year pro has gotten no help from his offensive line this season, but then again he has hurt the team as well when he does have time to throw. Unfortunately for the 49ers, even if they did decide to go with another guy, that guy is Blaine Gabbert, who has been atrocious under pressure throughout his career.

The 49ers finished the contest against Seattle with just 142 total yards of offense — just 20 yards more than Marshawn Lynch rushed for on Thursday night — and eight first downs. Kaepernick finished with 124 yards in the air on 13-of-24 passing, and for the first time in his career, per Maiocco, didn’t attempt a single run. He was also sacked six times for 43 yards and was generally running for his life on most passing plays.

It will be interesting to see how the 49ers address the unbelievable ineptitude that has been displayed by the offense on numerous occasions this year. Back after the team lost badly to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 4 we said they featured the worst offense in the NFL. In the weeks since, there was a bit of improvement against weak defenses, but it’s clear now the diagnosis remains the same.
