Colin Kaepernick discusses 49ers offensive woes, keys to success

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers offense was a stinky mess in a ugly 17-3 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Pretty much all that could go south for the quarterback did, and given the way the offense seems to be going more and more in the wrong direction it’s hard to pinpoint what could make things better.

After the game, Kaepernick discussed what went wrong and talked about how the team can rebound from loss No. 3 on the season.

“Study as much as I can and work as much I as I can; that’s the only way I know how to fix things,” Kaepernick said postgame on Sunday (via 49ers.com). “Talking about things and analyzing things is good and has its place, but at the end of the day you have to work to get better.”

With loads of work to accomplish before the 49ers make their way to the east coast to face the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football in Week 5, here are some more takeaways from Kap regarding the team’s loss.

The Packers defense read him like a book and applied tons of pressure, which caused him to get sacked six times on Sunday. Kaepernick knows how to beat the blitz, as a concept.

“We have to be able to get the ball out quick. We have to be able to get the ball into our playmakers’ hands as soon as we can.”

Kaepernick was asked about how the sideline conversations went with Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith, who had only five catches combined. During his reply, there were a few positive responses but one missing element: The element of ownership.

“They’re playmakers for this team, and they want to contribute. They want to have an impact. We weren’t able to get the ball to them and allow them to have that impact until later in the game, so I understand the frustration. It’s a team game though and they want to win.”

If there was one pass Kaepernick regrets, it was a terrible throw to a wide open Reggie Bush, which was followed by two more incompletions resulting in a turnover on downs to the Packers.

“I would say the one throw I want to have back is the one to Reggie. He made a great move, and I didn’t make the throw.”

To add injury to insult, Packers linebacker Clay Matthews had his way with Kaepernick all day long, imitating Kap’s signature biceps kiss and telling him that he’s no “Russell Wilson bro.”

The 49ers offense has managed only 10 points in its last two games and Kaepernick hasn’t thrown a touchdown in three of the four games to start the season. However, the embattled quarterback seemed confident that the team will work things out moving forward.

“We’ve done things well in different places in games. We have to be comfortable doing everything that this offense has to offer well. … We’re trying as hard as we can to make sure we’re doing things right and on the right track.”

Kaepernick can say all the words he wants about the situation. It’s the lousy plays he is making — missing wide-open guys by miles, taking pointless sacks or getting intercepted — that must change moving forward.

We’ll see if there is any improvement next Sunday evening.
