49ers OC may or may not have made ‘major changes’ to offense

After featuring the most inept offense in the NFL the past couple of weekends, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Geep Chryst had some interesting comments Thursday about what’s been done to remedy the situation.

Speaking with reports after Thursday’s practice in Santa Clara, Ca., Chryst revealed plenty by not saying much.

We made some major changes. I shouldn’t say major. We made some adjustments that we feel good about going into this game,” Chryst said, via Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. “But it would be disingenuous for me to elaborate on it, and then we go out to the game and it’s a clunker.”

This isn’t the statement of a confident coach, but who needs confidence, anyways?

Chryst further revealed his insecurity by saying, “We feel we’ve made some adjustments,” while making it clear he’s not at all confident they will work.

“But I’d rather tell you next week what we did do than forecast what may or may not happen,” he said.

The reason for Chryst’s unease is simple: Colin Kaepernick hasn’t been playing like he has a clue about how to operate behind center in the NFL for the past two games. His stunning four-interception performance against Arizona in Week 3 was followed up by a deer-in-the-headlights fiasco at home last weekend against the Green Bay Packers, who had his number from the get-go.

“Kap’s at a different spot performing the last two game than the first two games. This is the ebb and flow,” Chryst said.

The past two games, Kaepernick has completed just half his passes with no touchdowns and five interceptions, passing for just 227 yards while enduring eight sacks. The 49ers desperately need him to bounce back for a prime-time matchup against the hot New York Giants at MetLife Stadium this weekend on Sunday Night Football.

Further regression by the fifth-year passer would be potentially catastrophic for Kaepernick’s ever-growing confidence problem, and it would be a clear sign that San Francisco is in need of an overhaul at the quarterback position for future seasons.

On the flip side of the same coin, a breakout performance by the embattled quarterback could trigger a revival for one of the league’s most physically talented players, and potentially a victory for the 1-3 49ers.
