Timberwolves sign brother of Andrew Wiggins

Andrew Wiggins

The Minnesota Timberwolves have become a family affair, now that the franchise has added the older brother of rising star Andrew Wiggins. According to a team release, the franchise signed Nick Wiggins to a training camp deal.

But who is he?

Nick played for Wichita State in 2012-13 and 2013-14, tallying 5.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game while serving as a rotational piece. He went undrafted in 2014, played for the Sacramento Kings during Summer League action but didn’t make an NBA roster and briefly went overseas.

However, Wiggins returned to the United States in December and caught on with the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League one month later. He registered 9.8 points per game in 28 appearances.

This summer, Wiggins joined the Timberwolves Summer League squad and chipped in 4.0 points per outing. He apparently played well enough to necessitate a training camp invite.

As for his chances to make the roster, well, that’s unlikely at best.

Minnesota returns 11 players from the 2014-15 team and has three rookies—Karl-Anthony Towns, Tyus Jones and Nemanja Bjelica—ready to make their NBA debut. That leaves one spot on the roster, and the T-Wolves signed veterans Andre Miller and Tayshaun Prince as well as Damjan Rudez.

Wiggins is a fun story, and perhaps he’ll be a useful body in training camp. But Minnesota’s probable business decision will be to break up the family.
