Saints coach says report that Drew Brees could miss multiple games is ‘inaccurate’

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton wants to set the record straight regarding earlier reports that starting quarterback Drew Brees might miss multiple games due to a shoulder injury.

Payton made his weekly appearance on WWL Radio’s Coaches Monday night show and discussed NFL Network’s report that Brees could be out several weeks.

I would say his report is inaccurate,” Payton said (h/t team website). “Wednesday we will have a better idea. We will be smart. I thought coming off the game, it’s a tough loss for everyone. You lose your home opener in a division game. Drew battled and hung in there. He took some hits. We will have a better feel on Wednesday with where he is at. (Bobby) knows as well as anyone, he’s going to be a competitor and he’s going to be smart about it. I think we will have a better idea come Wednesday. I would definitely say that. I read the report you are discussing and I would say that’s inaccurate.”

Whatever Wednesday determines as far as Brees’ outlook, there is no denying the veteran quarterback was nowhere near in top form on Sunday. For those who watched the game, Brees’ struggle to make long passes was clearly evident. He also periodically rotated his shoulder as if to shake off the pain.

Brees endured four sacks, and while he managed to pass for 255 yards, he only had one touchdown and tossed an interception for a quarterback rating of only 29.4. As a result, the Saints lost their second game of the season 26-19 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
