Report: Warriors wanted Seth Curry, who ‘didn’t want to go back in Steph’s shadow’

The Golden State Warriors reportedly wanted to bring Seth Curry aboard to play with brother Steph Curry, but the younger sibling didn’t want anything to do with such an arrangement.

Lee Jenkins of Sports Illustrated published a feature on the younger Curry brother. The story is enlightening, and in it he provided a glimpse into what motivated Seth to reject the notion of playing with his brother in Golden State.

“The Kings made the strongest offer on July 21—the day after Summer League ended—but not the only one. The Pelicans, Hornets and Warriors jumped in as well. “I didn’t want to go to Golden State,” Seth says. “I didn’t want to go back in Steph’s shadow.”

It’s understandable that he’d want to make his own way in the NBA, rather than ride the coattails of his big brother on Golden State’s roster.

By joining Sacramento, the guard has a chance to make a name for himself as a featured player, and of course the guaranteed contract had something to do with his decision.

Had he joined up with the Warriors, there is no way Seth Curry would have cracked the starting roster, though he could have earned playing time as a valuable role player. Golden State’s lineup is loaded with talent—as witnessed by all during the team’s championship run this past spring.

In Sacramento, Curry now has an opportunity to parlay his recent D-League success into a starting role—or at least a significant bench role—on a team that is desperate for shooters. Like his older brother, Curry has a sweet shot and knows how to get open with and without the ball.

While it would have been a cool story for the national media if the Curry brothers had been featured on one team, it certainly seems like Sacramento was the right choice for Steph Curry’s younger brother.
