Sundays and Monday nights are meant for football, and NFL fans proved as much during the opening week of the 2015 regular season.

Greg Aiello, a spokesman for the league, shared that it was the most-watched kickoff weekend in NFL history.

Viewers were treated to exciting finishes with the Miami Dolphins’ 17-10 victory over the Washington football team and Dallas Cowboys’ 27-26 comeback win over the New York Giants, Marcus Mariota’s captivating debut for the Tennessee Titans and the St. Louis Rams’ 34-31 triumph over the reigning NFC champion Seattle Seahawks.

However, the new record was certainly affected by fans electing to stay home instead of heading to the stadium, since prices continue to rise. According to ESPN data, only four franchises reached 100 percent capacity, though eight teams topped the 90-percent mark.

Regardless, the popularity of the NFL continues to grow, and more television viewing records are bound to be set throughout the season.

Last year, the league averaged 17.7 million viewers per telecast, which was the second-highest clip ever. It would be a considerable surprise if the NFL doesn’t top that mark in 2015, especially after such a strong opening weekend.
