Mike Pettine on Johnny Manziel injury: ‘I don’t know when he will throw again’

The Cleveland Browns may have been downplaying backup quarterback Johnny Manziel’s sore elbow.

When asked about Manziel’s status, coach Mike Pettine said he had no idea when the second-year gunslinger would be able to return to action. Per ESPN’s Jason Gibbs, Pettine said:

“No. I don’t know when he will throw again, but he is doing his rehab exercises. He is on the training room protocol with it. There is not any real update with Johnny.”

A sore elbow has kept Manziel out of action for more than a week. Additionally, he’s already listed as a scratch in Thursday’s preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

Currently, Manziel is sitting behind quarterback Josh McCown, while backups Thad Lewis and Pat Devlin are filling the void. If Manziel’s injury continues to linger, the team could use some reinforcements.

With that said, the Browns may actively search for that depth via the waiver wire—which could soon be filled with cuts as NFL teams continue to trim their rosters—or perhaps in an intriguing trade.

One might start to wonder what Robert Griffin III or Tim Tebow would look like wearing orange and brown this season.
