Tom Coughlin: Victor Cruz not expected to practice this week

New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz isn’t expected to practice this upcoming week and could head into the season opener without any preseason action, according to head coach Tom Coughlin.

Cruz is dealing with a calf injury that caused him to miss practice the past couple of weeks, and at this point it appears the first action he’ll get in 2015 will be during the regular season.

Paul Schwartz of the New York Post notes Coughlin as saying “not as far as I know” when asked if Cruz would be practicing next week. He also reported the head coach saying, “That wouldn’t be the preferred way,” as it relates to Cruz missing the entire preseason.

This is a frustrating setback for Cruz and the Giants.

The talented receiver is trying to come back after suffering a painful patellar tendon injury that knocked him out of the 2014 season.

Of further concern is the fact that Cruz hasn’t spent much time in Ben McAdoo’s offense. McAdoo came over last season and helped Manning’s development by implementing a quick-read, quick-throw offense that limits the amount of time the quarterback spends in the pocket.

To this point, his participation in practice during training camp has been minimal, which means there will almost certainly be chemistry issues between himself and quarterback Eli Manning when he does return to action.

Giants fans should temper expectations for Cruz this season. He will almost certainly struggle to get back into the swing of things early on, but if he doesn’t encounter any further health issues could offer a tremendous boost later in the season.
