Report: Tom Brady may have been ‘open’ to one-game suspension

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady may have been willing to compromise just a bit on his NFL mandated four-game suspension for his alleged role in “Deflategate.”

According to reports, Brady may have been “open” to serving one game of suspension for not being cooperative in the Ted Wells investigation process, per Ian Rapoport NFL.com. This was something that had the possibility of being discussed when settlement talks took place Monday in court.

However, the talks never progressed. Federal court Judge Richard M. Berman announced that both sides were too far apart to continue on a settlement. As in past attempts to settle, the talks have never gotten very far due to Brady’s stance that he won’t accept the findings in the Wells Report. He denies having any knowledge about the deflation of footballs used in the AFC title game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Both publicly and privately, Brady maintains his innocence. However, Brady has realized, and his attorney has spoken about it as well, that he should have been more cooperative and forthright in the investigation process. For that, apparently Brady may have been willing to sit out one game.

Meanwhile, the NFL had been willing to shorten Brady’s four-game suspension by two games if he owned up and accepted some of the responsibility for the deflated footballs, per reports.

Until Judge Berman makes a ruling, which could come as early as Tuesday, both sides still have the opportunity to settle per a source close to the situation.

Until then, the clock is ticking down to the season opener between the Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, which takes place on Thursday September 10.
