Report: Lakers and Rockets Showing Interest in Ty Lawson

One would think that the market for Ty Lawson’s services are currently at an all-time low. Following a second DUI arrest this year, the enigmatic guard finds himself in hot water with both the Association and the law.

The veteran guard was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol early Thursday morning in Los Angeles. He was then taken into custody for suspicion of a DUI.

This follows an incident Colorado back in January after Lawson was spotted going 60 in a 35 mph zone. He was also arrested for a DUI following that encounter.

This is all coming amid reports that Lawson has been on the trade block since the end of the 2014-15 campaign. There had been previous discussions between his Denver Nuggets and the Sacramento Kings leading up to the draft last month, but nothing materialized there. Lawson was also the subject of rumors surrounding the New York Knicks.

With his latest off-court issue, Lawson’s primary goal has to be to get his life in order. However, a recent report from Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix indicates that there seems to be some interest in Lawson on the trade block:

“Houston, Detroit and the L.A. Lakers are among the teams that have expressed interest in Lawson recently, and there remains a strong possibility the Nuggets could unload Lawson before training camp.”

This would definitely be a buy-low situation for any team willing to take on the headache Lawson will bring.

On the court, Lawson has been among the most productive guards in the NBA over the past several years. The former first-round pick averaged 15.2 points and 9.6 assists per game—making him a near double-double performer from the guard position. There’s little doubt that he offers a ton of intrigue to teams looking to add talent in the backcourt.

Of those squads Mannix reported were interested in Lawson, the Houston Rockets seem to make the most sense. While they did retain point guard Patrick Beverley on a long-term deal earlier this month, star 2-guard James Harden has made it known that he would like to see more talent added to the backcourt.
