Report: Kelvin Benjamin is healthy and at ‘perfect’ weight for training camp

Kelvin Benjamin

Last month Carolina Panthers second-year wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin was reportedly having a battle with his weight along with dealing with a bum hamstring.

Whether it was some extra laps around the field, more time on the treadmill or a stricter diet, Benjamin —who was 245 pounds in his rookie year—now claims he is at his “perfect” weight.

“I’m not on the scale,” he said, according to ESPN.com. “But I’m playing weight.”

Benjamin wasn’t able to practice in 10 of the Panthers’ 14 offseason practices because of a sore hamstring. This led to the speculation by head coach Ron Rivera that some extra weight Benjamin was carrying led to the injury. This week at a charity golf event, Rivera said he received good news regarding Benjamin’s hamstring and fitness and expects him to be a full go when training camp opens on July 30.

The 6-foot-5 jumbo-sized receiver had 73 catches totaling 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns in his rookie season. Look for Benjamin, along with rookie wideout Devin Funchess who stands 6-foot-5 as well, to team up for a dynamic one-two punch with their mobile giant of a quarterback Cam Newton this fall.
