The Atlanta Hawks may have lost starting forward DeMarre Carroll to the Toronto Raptors in free agency earlier on Wednesday, but they were able to hang on to All-Star Paul Millsap.
According to multiple media reports, the Hawks have signed Millsap to a three-year deal worth $59 million. This comes just hours after the forward was reportedly expressing serious interest in joining the Orlando Magic.
Millsap, 30, put up an average of 16.7 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 48 percent for a surprising Hawks team last season. Retaining him was essential in the franchise’s hopes of continued contention in the Eastern Conference.
It also comes on the same day that Atlanta picked up fellow big man Tiago Splitter from the San Antonio Spurs in what amounts to a salary dump.
With Al Horford, Millsap and Splitter on board this upcoming season, Atlanta is going to throw out an imposing front court in a conference without many top-end post players. That in and of itself could help offset the loss of Carroll in free agency.
