Report: Demaryius Thomas and Broncos Not Expected to Reach a Deal by Deadline

With the NFL franchise tag deadline expiring Wednesday afternoon, it does not appear that the Denver Broncos and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas will come to terms on new agreement.

Without a deal, Thomas is expected to miss all of training camp and the preseason. He could also decide to skip games if he really wanted to play some hardball. However, that would come at the cost of forfeiting $750,000 per game.

When we see or hear from Thomas remains unknown. It’s likely the 27-year-old receiver will report once the regular season approaches. However, his absence during head coach Gary Kubiak’s first training camp with the team wouldn’t bode well for Thomas’ ability to make an impact in Denver’s new offensive scheme.

The issue for Thomas is long-term security. While the receiver could conceivably hit the free agent market next year, there’s no guaranteed the Broncos wouldn’t place the franchise tag on him again. Thomas reportedly wants to be the highest-paid receiver in the NFL.

According to reports, the Broncos have offered Thomas a salary of well over $12 million per year and claim to have done everything they can on their end to accomplish a deal.
