Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown: “hold outs never go well”

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown tinkered with the idea of holding out of his team’s OTA’s back in April. That was short-lived because Brown has since attended all the team’s offseason activities.

Speaking on the subject of holdouts, which are still very fresh in our memories due to wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Dez Bryant playing that game, Brown shared this on Saturday (via NFL com).

“Hold outs never go well. Just look at history. It always ends badly. It wouldn’t be the best decision. I make a lot of money. I pull up to camp in Rolls-Royces.”

The Rolls Brown is flashing around town in is estimated at $453,000 for the standard model. We can be sure Brown poured a bunch more cash into the car with all of the incredible customizing that he has done.

Brown is definitely smart to play nice with his team. His current contract ranks him eighth overall when it comes to his value as a whole for the position. However, his per-year average salary ranks him 14th behind receivers like Pierre Garcon and Jeremy Maclin. In 2015, Brown is on course to receive $6 million.

If we look at the five-year $70 million deals that Thomas and Bryant just inked, they are both set to receive $14 million this year. Brown led all NFL receivers in receptions (129) and receiving yards (1,698) in 2014.

Looking at this batch of numbers, we can see why Brown briefly tossed around the holdout idea a few months ago. However, if he keeps posting monster stats, he will be up for a similar raise to that of Bryant and Thomas sometime in the next couple of years.

For now, it appears Brown has his head on straight.

“You know you get caught up thinking about the future you lose sight of the present,” Brown said. “What I’m here to do today is to show how hard I’ve been working, showcase I can still be the best in the world and help my team win football games.”

When that even larger payday comes, Brown will surely be in the position to arrive to training camp in nearly anything his heart desires.
