Orioles Reportedly Interested in Carlos Gomez, Justin Upton

The Baltimore Orioles currently find themselves in the midst of the American League East race at 46-45 on the season. Despite a less-than-stellar overall performances thus far this year, the current standings suggest that Baltimore has a real shot at the postseason.

So it shouldn’t be considered that much of a surprise that the team is interested in adding to the roster.

Fox Sports MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reported on Sunday that the Orioles have shown interest in Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez as well as San Diego Padres power hitter Justin Upton.

If you remember correctly, it was reported last week that Milwaukee had put Gomez on the trade block after the team’s first-half struggles.

Upton being on the block shouldn’t be too much of a surprise either. San Diego entered Sunday’s action with a 43-49 record and nearly 10 games behind the National League West leading Los Angeles Dodgers. Upton, who is earning $14.7 million this year, will be a free agent in the winter. It remains to be seen whether San Diego has the financial resources to compete with big-market teams for his services. The 27-year-old outfielder entered Saturday batting .250 with 15 homers, 49 RBI’s and 17 stolen bases.

As it relates to Gomez, he’s not set to hit the open market until after the 2016 season. The two-time All-star will earn $9 million in 2016—a number that makes him a highly valuable commodity on the trade block.

Either player would act as an upgrade in the outfield for Baltimore. The team has been platooning the likes of Travis Snider and Steve Pearce, among others, in left field this year. However, it remains to be seen whether the Orioles have the necessary talent in the farm system to pull a trade off.

The trade deadline is a week from Friday.
