In yet another attempt to add reinforcements to their roster for the stretch run, the surprising New York Mets have acquired All-Star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes from the Detroit Tigers.

Even after picking up both Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe from the Atlanta Braves earlier in July, New York needed to add another bat to a lineup that had struggled a great deal thus far this year. In Cespedes, the team acquires a rental that could help it challenge the Washington Nationals in the National League East for the stretch run. New York entered Friday’s action with a 52-50 record and three games behind Washington in the division.
Cespedes, 29, is hitting .293 with 18 homers, 61 RBI’s and a .829 OPS this year. This is the third time the two-time All-Star has been traded in a calendar year. Remember, he was dealt from the Oakland Athletics to the Boston Red Sox for Jon Lester exactly one year ago Friday.
Cespedes is slated to become a free agent this winter.
While there are no specifics regarding what Detroit received in the deal, Rosenthal is reporting that it amounts to two prospects. The names are not yet know.
