Houston Texans’ Owner Bob McNair, who has recently received a clean bill of health after battling cancer this past year, started an initiative to build “Hope Lodge” in Houston. The facility is associated with the American Cancer Society and will cover the expenses of people traveling to the facility to receive cancer treatments.
McNair brought forth the challenge that for every $2 donated to the facility, the Robert and Janice McNair Foundation will donate $1. The challenge will run through the end of the year and the McNair Foundation will reportedly donate up to $4 million for the project.
This is where Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones comes in. He will be reportedly be donating $1 million to McNair’s cause from the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Foundation.
Jones had this to say about his generous donation to McNair’s support facility:
“Cancer is already daunting enough, but worrying about travel, lodging, and other necessities while enduring treatment can be a huge burden,” Jones told the Houston Chronicle. “Gene and I are proud we can help by joining Bob and Janice McNair and President George and Barbara Bush as they work to bring a Hope Lodge to Houston.”
McNair appreciates the support coming from another team owner:
“We are grateful to our friends, Gene and Jerry Jones, for recognizing the need and helping us reach our campaign goal this year. By coming together and supporting a project like Hope Lodge Houston we are able to make a greater impact for deserving cancer patients.”
McNair is now healthy after a 10-month long bout with two different types of cancer. He made the announcement of his fundraising challenge just shortly after finding out he was cancer-free.
