Jerry Dipoto Officially Steps Down as Angels General Manager

The rocky relationship between the Los Angeles Angels and Jerry Dipoto officially came to an end on Wednesday afternoon when the general manager officially resigned.

This came amid reports early Wednesday morning that there was going to be a sizable shakeup in the makeup of the Angels front office hierarchy.

Dipoto’s resignation also shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

One of the sources of ongoing friction between himself and Angels manager Mike Scioscia, the former Major League relief pitcher ultimately decided it wasn’t worth remaining with a franchise that likely viewed him as nothing more than a figure than a central player in the philosophy of the front office.

That apparently reared its ugly head when Dipoto threw the Angels an ultimatum on Monday night—one that potentially included the team firing Scioscia or Dipota himself stepping down. We now know how that demand turned out.

Dipoto, 47, took over as the team’s general manager back in 2011. He proceeded to sign Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton—both utter failures—to long-term contracts at the behest of ownership. Under Dipoto, the Angels have also given out costly extensions to Mike Trout (no-brainer), Erick Aybar and Huston Street, among others.

Despite Dipoto’s seemingly decent work in the front office, Los Angeles finished 2014 with a premature exit in the divisional round of the playoffs. That came on the heels of a 2013 campaign that saw the Angels finish 18 games out of first place.

Midway through this season, the Angels sit four games over .500 and in second place in the American League West.
