Fourth ACL Tear Ends Duke Linebacker’s Career

It’s just horrible when we see news like this. Duke University linebacker Kelby Brown, an All-ACC performer, suffered the fourth ACL tear of his college career on Tuesday and will hang up his cleats.

Granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA after tearing up his left knee last August, the Blue Devils were expecting big things from Brown as a sixth-year senior. However, this latest torn ACL will prove too much for him to overcome. He had previously suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in both 2010 and 2012 before the left knee injuries last August and then again on Tuesday.

Duke head coach David Cutcliffe had this to say about Brown following reports that the star linebacker was retiring (via CBS Sports):

“It’s difficult to put into words the feeling of heartbreak I have for Kelby and his family. While we will certainly miss his athletic abilities and leadership as one of the best linebackers to play at Duke, what is most important above all else is Kelby’s health.”

Brown’s last full season came back in 2013 when he earned All-ACC First-Team honors for a surprising 10-win Duke team.
