Russell Wilson Wants to Remain With the Seahawks “For a Very, Very Long Time”

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson’s contract extension is an extremely hot topic these days. Speaking from the Russell Wilson Passing Academy, the quarterback shared this regarding his status with the Seahawks:

“The contract will work out. It will work itself out,” Wilson said. “I’m excited about it. I’m excited to hopefully be a Seattle Seahawks for a very, very long time. So that’s the goal.”

Wilson reportedly wants to be the NFL’s highest-paid player by the time a long-term deal is settled. This would mean a deal exceeding the $110 million Aaron Rodgers received from the Green Bay Packers back in April of 2013.

If no deal is in place by next spring, Wilson will become a free agent. At which point, the Seahawks could put a franchise tag on him to keep him. That’s definitely not the solution Wilson is looking for here.

Wilson is on course to make only $1.5 million this year as part of his rookie deal he signed in 2012. He’s obviously one of the most underpaid players in the NFL given his status as a third-round pick and the fact that he couldn’t negotiate a new deal until after the 2014 season.

If the Seahawks aren’t willing to pay their elite quarterback come next spring, there are certainly other teams who would be willing to pay the piper to get a potential franchise signal caller. The biggest issue moving forward, especially if Wilson doesn’t get a new deal by March, is whether Seattle will place the exclusive or non-exclusive franchise tag on him. The latter would afford other teams the ability to sign Wilson while yielding two first-round picks to Seattle.
