Report: Suns Expected to Re-sign Brandon Knight

It appears that the Phoenix Suns are on the verge of taking care of their top offseason priority by re-signing guard Brandon Knight.

Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times is reporting that the two sides are on the verge of agreeing to a five-year, $70 million contract. And while teams can’t necessarily negotiate with impending free agents until Wednesday, we know full well that they can find a way to get around that rule.

If Woelfel’s report is accurate, it would be a pretty big coup for Phoenix. After putting up an average of 17.8 points and 5.4 assists per game for the Milwaukee Bucks prior to a mid-season deal to the Suns, Knight was sidelined for all but 11 games with his new team due to a foot injury. If that had not happened, he likely would have been looking at a near-max contract offer as a restricted free agent. Getting the 23-year-old guard for an average of just $12 million per season is a bargain in today’s market.

It’s also going to lead to questions surrounding Eric Bledsoe and his future with the Suns. We heard numerous reports of a potential trade that would have sent the guard to the New York Knicks in the lead up to the draft—rumors that will now pick up steam with Knight reportedly in line to return to the desert.

Interestingly, Knight’s reported contract represents the same five-year, $70 million extension Bledsoe signed with Phoenix back in September.
