According to the Montreal Alouettes vice president Jim Popp, several non-disclosed NFL teams have contacted him since defensive end Michael Sam abruptly took a leave of absence for personal reasons.

“I do think there are still teams in this day that still have interest in him, and they are hoping he does play in the CFL and he does well, because they want to take a chance on him for their team — or see him do certain things for their team. They wouldn’t be calling if they weren’t interested,” Popp told the Guardian. “They were monitoring him to see how he did here. There’s a lot of people who want to see Michael Sam play, and they are going to tune in to see him play.”

Popp believes that the teams are hoping Sam returns so they can monitor his play to see if he can prove on the field. Popp also claimed that he would be surprised if Sam doesn’t return to the Alouettes, who play their first game on Thursday.

Popp also indicated that his team pursued Sam shortly after he was cut from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad last season, at which point they were also interested in Tim Tebow.
