Defensive end Michael Sam was signed to the Montreal Alouettes back in May. However, he abruptly left the team for “personal reasons” shortly after signing.
It is reported by Charles Rooke, a representative for the Alouettes, that they hold no grudge and Sam is welcome to return if he wants to (via TMZ Sports).
“I don’t know what his problems were, so it’s hard to say if he’ll be back. If he wants to play football, we want to have him.”
Sam’s deal with the Alouettes is for two years, so if he wants to return during this time, he will be able to. Rooke’s open invitation to Sam did throw a bit of shade his way:
“It’s not like our season is down the drain [without Sam]. Even the best players coming from down south experience a learning curve. The games are similar, but aren’t identical.”
Sam is best known for being the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. However, he has struggled latching on with a team after both the St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys parted ways with him last year. A major struggle at the first ever veteran scouting combine in Arizona this spring didn’t help matters.
If Sam really wants to play football, a return to the Alouettes is essentially his last hope.
