Max Scherzer Misses Perfect Game, Throws No-Hitter

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer had retired the first 26 batters he faced Saturday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates before hitting outfielder Jose Tabata on the elbow with two outs in the ninth.

The prize of this past winter’s free agent market then ended up retiring Josh Harrison on a fly ball to deep left field to complete the no-hitter.

When all was said and done, the veteran struck out 10 and walked nobody in a 106-pitch gem that saw him throw just 24 balls throughout the afternoon.

Again, it didn’t come without some controversy.

It sure looks like Tabata leaned into the pitch that ended up hitting him to break up the perfect game:

Scherzer, who now boasts a 1.76 ERA on the season, put up the second no-hitter in franchise history since its move from Montreal. Jordan Zimmerman accomplished the same feat last September.

Scherzer took a perfect game into the seventh in a one-hit effort in his last start against the Milwaukee Brewers. By virtue of his no-hitter on Saturday, the 30-year-old righty is the first pitcher in over 70 years to allow one hit or fewer in consecutive starts.

It’s the second no-hitter this year. San Francisco Giants starter Chris Heston threw up all zeros against the New York Mets just two weeks ago.
