Justin Hunter on Marcus Mariota: “He’s a Real Good Quarterback”

Optimism around the NFL is taken to a whole new level during the summer months. Just a little over a month after expressing a less-than-positive reaction to the Tennessee Titans selecting Marcus Mariota in the 2015 NFL draft, wide receiver Justin Hunter is singing a different tune.

“We have to make the plays for him (Mariota),” Justin Hunter said, via the team’s website, “even though he’s a smooth guy. He’s a real good quarterback. I see it in him.”

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. After Tennessee exhausted the second overall pick on the Oregon product back in late April, it became a foregone conclusion that Mariota would start out of the gate. While Hunter and fellow wide receiver Kendall Wright seemed supportive of the team moving on with Zach Mettenberger, they have to make the most of the situation. Tennessee’s front office made a decision, and it’s time to make it work.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this relationships plays out. Both Hunter and Wright have failed to take that next step as truly consistent receivers. Now with a dynamic quarterback under center, they have that opportunity in 2015.

As Hunter said, it’s all about the receivers making plays for Mariota early in the quarterback’s career. If that happens, the Titans’ offense could surprise some people this year.
