Buccaneers WR Compares Jameis Winston to Tim Tebow

New Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Louis Murphy is making some news after speaking out about his experience with Jameis Winston during the team’s first OTAs of the offseason.

During an interview with Sirius XM, Murphy was asked if he is concerned with Winston’s off-field issues, at which point he shared this interesting response:

“No, not really. I just saw how much of a competitor he is. He competes. He doesn’t like losing. He wants to win and that’s a guy I want to play with. He’s young, kind of similar to Tim Tebow in a way, he just wants to win. He’ll do anything it takes to win. But he’s young, everyone makes mistakes … I’m just really excited to be with a guy who is really passionate about playing this game.”

Murphy played with Tebow 2006-2008 when the pair attended the University of Florida.

We can agree that both Winston and Tebow are competitors and are driven to succeed on the football field. However, that’s where the similarities end. Winston’s and Tebow’s off-field behaviors are in no way similar. Even if that’s not the comparison Murphy was drawing here, his comments are surely going to provide some interesting responses.

The perceptions of Winston and Tebow couldn’t be any more different. One entered the NFL as a representation of what should define the student-athlete in today’s college football world. The other is Jameis Winston.

After being selected No. 1 overall in this year’s NFL draft, Winston is going to be under a lot of pressure to perform. More than that, his off-field behavior is going to be put under a microscope.

If Winston can be compared favorably to Tebow moving forward, it will be a good sign for the Buccaneers. At the very least from a character and mental standpoint.

He’s just in no way there yet.
