Alex Rodriguez Now in Second Place on the All-Time RBI List

In a season that’s going to be full of milestones for New York Yankees infielder Alex Rodriguez, the much-maligned veteran surpassed yet another enigmatic player on an important list.

By virtue of a fifth-inning RBI single against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night, Rodriguez moved ahead of Barry Bonds for second on the all-time list with 1,997 career RBI.

Only Hank Aaron and his 2,297 RBI remain in the way of A-Rod and the all-time record.

Remember, RBI’s didn’t become an official stat around Major League Baseball until 1920. And while other sites do calculate RBI’s from before that year, MLB’s official statistician, Elias, doesn’t.

If you look at MLB.com’s stats, Rodriguez sits behind both Aaron and Babe Ruth on the all-time RBI list. That site takes into account the RBI’s Ruth accumulated prior to 1920.

Friday night’s outing was also Rodriguez’s first four-hit game since the 2011 season. He now sits just nine hits away from the exclusive 3,000-hit club.

Rodriguez had this to say about his accomplishment following the game on Friday night:

“It just means I’m getting older, every day,” Rodriguez said. “I’m happy. I’m in a good place. It doesn’t escape me that all these milestones are coming at home in front of our fans.”

The 39-year-old infielder is hitting .284 with 11 homers and 28 RBI on the season.
