With Darren McFadden currently looking like the team’s top option at running back, the Dallas Cowboys are reaching out to some veterans in order to add to their depth chart.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Cowboys are working out running back Ben Tate, who played for three teams during the 2014 campaign.
Additionally, the team is reportedly looking at Felix Jones.
As it relates to Tate, he was all the hype entering the 2014 season. Moving on from being Arian Foster’s backup with the Houston Texans, many figured Tate would have a breakout campaign with the Cleveland Browns. That did not happen. The former second-round pick averaged just 3.1 yards per attempt before being waived after just eight games. Tate then played three games for the Minnesota Vikings, tallying a paltry 38 total yards. After Minnesota released him, the veteran caught on with the Pittsburgh Steelers to help in the absence of Le’Veon Bell during the playoffs. He had five carries for 19 yeards.
Jones, a first-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2008, is a real stretch. He hasn’t played since suiting up for the aforementioned Steelers back in 2013. He last worked out for a NFL team back in 2014 with the New York Giants.
Even if the Cowboys were to sign one of these veterans, he would be a long shot to earn a roster spot. In addition to McFadden, Ryan Williams and Joseph Randle will be battling for the starting job come summer time.
