Report: Dolphins WR Rishard Matthews Wants Out of Miami

The Miami Dolphins have spent much of their offseason rebuilding their wide receiving corps from the ground up, but the changes may not be done just yet. According to the Miami Herald‘s Adam H. Beasley, a source has told him that Dolphins wide receiver Rishard Matthews has opted to sit out of the team’s voluntary workouts to try to force the team to release or trade him.

Matthews’ work stoppage coincides with the Dolphins drafting wide receiver DeVante Parker in Round 1 of the 2015 NFL draft; prior to the pick, Matthews had been working out with the team, according to Beasley. But the addition of Parker means that Matthews drops to No. 5 on the team’s wide receiver depth chart, behind Parker, Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills and Greg Jennings, likely meaning very little playing time for him this year if he remains in Miami.

Matthews was a Dolphins’ 2012 seventh-round draft pick. In three seasons, he’s appeared in 38 games with six starts; he had zero starts in 2014. He has a total of 64 catches on 109 targets for 734 yards and four touchdowns and had 12 catches on 22 targets for 135 yards and one score last year. He was also deactivated for one game last season for disciplinary reasons and Beasley notes that “Matthews has sparred with Dolphins coach Joe Philbin in the past.”

A marginal player even before the Dolphins picked up Parker, Matthews’ complaint makes sense. But given his history and his seventh-round pedigree, it may not be possible for him to find a team willing to give him the playing time he is seeking.
