The Green Bay Packers decided to add to their wide receiver depth by selecting Ty Montgomery out of Stanford in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. After Montgomery was selected, a Packers scout referred to him as a “bigger Randall Cobb.”
Cobb, the Packers current slot receiver, stands 5-foot-10 and weighs 192 pounds. Montgomery, who is similar in physical build, is 6-foot and 216 pounds. Since the Packers are quite layered with receivers, Montgomery will be likely enter the scene as a kick-return specialist in addition to being utilized infrequently on offense. As of now, Cobb, Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams are the Packers top-three receivers. This will leave Montgomery to compete with Jared Abbrederis and Jeff Janis for playing time as the fourth option.
Already turning heads during rookie minicamp, Montgomery received some praise from the Packers’ staff:
“(Montgomery) Obviously has a ton of explosion in his body,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said, via Fox Sports. “I thought he definitely stood out.”
It is worth noting that the Packers have made some excellent second and third-round picks at wide receiver over the years. Dating back to Greg Jennings, Green Bay’s general manager Ted Thompson selected James Jones, Nelson, Cobb, and Adams all during these two rounds in the draft. Montgomery could be another name to add to this list if he performs as well as the Packers expect.
