Chip Kelly Clarifies Tim Tebow’s Status: “He’s a Quarterback”

As a large contingent of media surrounded Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly’s press conference on Thursday, most of the focus turned to the team’s new quarterback.

In addressing questions about how Philadelphia might utilize Tim Tebow, Kelly had a pretty direct response:

“He’s a quarterback,” Kelly stated, via NFL.com. “That’s how we’re looking at Timmy. We’re not looking at him at any other position.”

Kelly also indicated that the team had planned on bringing on a fourth quarterback throughout the entire offseason. There just weren’t any better options than Tebow on the market.

The Eagles’ head coach continued to throw support behind his embattled signal caller:

“You guys will see him (Tebow) today. Watch him throw. I think he’s improved. He’s spent a lot of time in the last few years in terms of working on his game.”

Kelly previously stated that he was always a fan of Tebow and that he’s there to compete for the starting job.

In shooting down rumors that Tebow might be used in packages on two-point conversion attempts, Kelly also indicated that the team likely won’t be going for two more often than in the past.

In the grand scheme of things, none of these comments should be surprising. Kelly has a way of hiding his real intentions when speaking to the press, so we likely won’t know Philadelphia’s plans for Tebow until the preseason.
