Report: Panthers Sign Charles Tillman

The Carolina Panthers have signed former Chicago Bears cornerback Charles “Peanut” Tillman to a one-year contract.

Tillman, 34, has played in just 10 games over the past two seasons after undergoing triceps surgery both years. The 12-year veteran earned Pro Bowl honors in 2011 before following that up with First-Team All-Pro honors the following season. He led the NFL in defensive touchdowns both seasons.

In announcing the deal, Carolina had this to say:

Charles brings veteran leadership and experience and has familiarity with both (head coach) Ron (Rivera) and (assistant head coach/secondary) Steve (Wilks),” general manager Dave Gettleman said. “He is a high-character player that we are excited to add to our team.”

If Tillman is healthy, he will be a major upgrade over what the team had last season. The biggest issue here is both his health and his advanced age for a cornerback.

Over the course of his career, Tillman has started 152 games and recorded 36 interceptions.
