Leonard Williams on NFL Draft: “Yeah, I feel like I Should be Taken No. 1”

During an interview after a “Play 60” event in Chicago on Wednesday, former USC defensive tackle Leonard Williams was asked if Dante Fowler Jr. was the top defensive player in the draft.

Williams paid a compliment to the former Florida edge rusher, but refused to indicate that Fowler Jr. was the best defensive player in the draft.

I respect his confidence. I feel like every player is going to have to have that type of confidence to do well at the next level, but at the same time I feel like I’m the best defensive player.

When asked about where he should be drafted, Williams didn’t hesitate in determining that he should go No. 1 overall.

Unfortunately for Williams, his plans to go off of the draft board with the first pick will likely be foiled by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the opportunity to choose the top quarterback prospect in the draft, Jameis Winston, it would be shocking if the Buccaneers suddenly strayed and went a different direction.

It is possible, however, that the Tennessee Titans select Williams with the second overall pick.

Being the top overall prospect and actually hearing your name called first are two different things. There are experts out there who do believe Williams is the top player in the draft.

Just happy to be in the position he is, Williams will easily be selected within the first handful of picks. This is magnified by his scheme flexibility. Williams can play in both the base 4-3 and 3-4 defensive fronts.

I think I will flourish in whatever defensive front I play in. In a 3-4, I’ll play defensive end. In a 4-3, I’ll probably most likely want to play a D-tackle

The other possible landing spot for Williams could be his home-state Oakland Raiders, a potential the top prospect also discussed:

I think that would be awesome to stay in California. I’d love to play for a fan base like that.

Williams also admitted his mother is an Oakland Raiders’ fan.

Fortunately, Williams will not have to wait much longer to find out where his new home is.
