Denver Broncos Von Miller Drops Weight, Ready to Switch to 3-4 OLB

Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller had a very productive 2014 season, given that he returned to the field just eight months removed from an ACL tear that ended his 2013 season. He had 59 combined tackles and 14 sacks, along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

However, that wasn’t good enough for Miller. In speaking to the Denver Post‘s Nicki Jhabvala, Miller detailed his offseason workout and nutrition regimen, one that has slimmed him down from a high weight of 252 pounds last year to 242 pounds at present.

Sometimes you just have to step away from the burgers and stuff. It might not be hurting you, but it’s definitely not helping you,” said Miller, who is now on a diet of “chicken, fish, broccoli and a gallon of water a day.”

He is also sticking to a daily training schedule, not taking any days off. As a result, he feels as though he is “in better shape” than he was heading into OTAs a year ago. Being so far removed from his ACL injury, which limited how he could prepare for the 2014 season, has also allowed him to push himself further.

The weight loss isn’t about vanity. It’s also a practical matter. The Broncos are switching to a 3-4 defense under new coordinator Wade Phillips, which means a move from defensive end to outside linebacker for Miller. The position requires more than just having the speed to rush the passer, but also to pursue running backs on outside lanes and to assist in coverage. By getting leaner, Miller will be more effective when taking on these additional responsibilities.

Miller is no stranger to the 3-4 linebacker position, having played it in college at Texas A&M. His transition to end was a smooth one, with Miller totaling 11.5 in his rookie, 2011 season.[mks_pullquote align=”right” width=”300″ size=”19″ bg_color=”#000000″ txt_color=”#25bbed”]His transition to end was a smooth one, with Miller totaling 11.5 in his rookie, 2011 season[/mks_pullquote] Aside from 2013, when he suffered his knee injury, Miller has posted double-digit sack totals in each of his seasons with the Broncos. With his recent weight loss and dedication to being in the best playing shape he can, it’s likely that he’ll find success in Phillips’ defense this year.
