Sean Payton and the Saints Hope to Re-Sign Mark Ingram

The New Orleans Saints would love to keep running back Mark Ingram, one of the few players who actually shined last season. However, the team is in horrific trouble when it comes to the salary cap which currently is in a deficit to the tune of $21.9 million.

The Saints, who are coming off of a miserable 2014 season, will need to create small miracles in the coming weeks in order to balance their cap and upgrade their roster. Retaining Ingram would be one of those miracles. In discussions with Ingram, coach Sean Payton had this to share about the team’s hope to keep him in 2015 (via the New Orleans Advocate).

I spoke with him today. The good thing about Mark is that we’re real close with his agent. We work a lot with Joel (Segal). Mickey will talk with him quite a bit. Obviously he’s someone that we want to keep. Hopefully we can do that.

Ingram put up 964 rushing yards and nine touchdowns this past season. He did so despite missing the final three games of the year with a hand injury. It’s safe to assume that the former first-round pick will look for a raise from his rookie deal.

Unfortunately, Ingram has most likely priced himself out of any type of affordable deal for the Saints. There will be several other teams who have money to spend that are in need of an upgrade at running back. Providing he and the Saints do not come to some type of an agreement before March 10th, Ingram will receive a nice amount of play on the open market. Heck, the San Francisco 49ers have already been mentioned as a possibility.

During his four years in New Orleans, Ingram racked up a total of 2,426 rushing yards and scored 19 touchdowns.
