Report: Patrick Willis Expected to Announce Retirement

Funny things are going on in San Francisco right now. According to Yahoo Sports NFL insider Rand Getlin, the 49ers are expecting All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis to retire after just eight seasons in the NFL.

The report didn’t expand on the potential reasons behind Willis’ likely retirement, but other information has come out indicating that it’s due to some sort of “religious awakening” on the linebacker’s part.

Regardless of the reason, this leaves a huge void on the 49ers defense. While Chris Borland did fill in well with Willis out due to a toe injury last season, the team is losing its inspirational leader on the defensive side of the ball.

In his eight seasons in San Francisco, Willis earned seven trips to the Pro Bowl and five All-Pro honors. He’s considered one of the best inside linebackers of the modern era, and will likely be a first ballot Hall of Famer.

For San Francisco, the hits keep on coming.
