Report: NFL’s Background Check on Jameis Winston to be Extensive

At this point, it’s almost a foregone conclusion that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston will be the first overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

This doesn’t mean that the league plans on sitting back while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select the former Heisman winner with that top pick.

According to Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, the NFL will conduct the “most thorough” background check in the history of the league when it reviews Winston’s off-field issues.

Cole went on to indicate that the league’s handling of the Ray Rice situation plays a role in its plans to vet the already embattled young quarterback. The main point of emphasis for the NFL is making sure that it knows any other potential issues in Winston’s past before it is made public. This would enable the league to make decisions that aren’t reactionary to public pressure. That obviously happened during the entire Rice situation.

Winston’s off-field issues are already well documented, and the Buccaneers are comfortable selecting him first overall. That would all change if something else from his past came up. It’s also important to note that Winston is subject to personnel conduct violations from his days at Florida State. That’s something else the league is likely looking into. Though, there doesn’t seem to be much the NFL would do regarding the sexual assault allegations considering charges were never filed.
