Report: Julius Thomas to Sign with the Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars have apparently netted a rather big fish in free agency. According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, Jacksonville will sign tight end Julius Thomas to a multi-year deal worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $9 million annually.

That’s a mighty high price to pay for a tight end that some view to be nothing more than a product of Peyton Manning with the Denver Broncos.

However, Thomas’ numbers are impressive. Despite missing three games due to injury this past season, the former fourth-round pick from Portland State was still able to put up 12 touchdowns for the second consecutive year. Though, it must be noted that he recorded just 43 receptions for less than 500 yards in the process.

A total of $9 million per season for a player with just over 100 career receptions seems to be ridiculous. The idea behind it had to be to team Thomas up with young signal caller Blake Bortles, who is seen as the franchise quarterback moving forward. Getting him a reliable target at tight end could be big moving forward.
