Report: Eagles to Release Trent Cole

The Philadelphia Eagles continue to shed from their payroll in the lead up to free agency. According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Caplan, the team will release pass rusher Trent Cole after the two sides were unable to come to terms on a restructured contract.

Cole, 32, was set to count $11.625 million against the cap. By releasing him, Philadelphia will save $8.425 million against the cap, bringing its total cap room to over $40 million. This comes on the heels of the team releasing veterans James Casey, Todd Herremans and Cary Williams earlier this offseason.

It’s safe to say that new player personnel head Chip Kelly is planning to make somewhat of a statement in free agency.

Cole, a two-time Pro Bowler, recorded 6.5 sacks this past season. After tallying three consecutive double-digit sack campaigns from 2009-2011, the former fifth-round pick has racked up just 17.5 over the past three years combined.

Despite this, there promises to be a solid market for his services in free agency.

With this move, Philadelphia will likely turn its attention to retaining soon-to-be free agent Brandon Graham.
