Report: 49ers Sign Torrey Smith

In what has to be the least surprising news of the first day of free agency, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly signed former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith to a five-year, $40 million contract.

Seemingly looking for a deep threat for the better part of the past decade, San Francisco made rare trek into the open market by inking the former second-round pick to a lucrative deal.

Smith, 26, recorded 49 receptions for 767 yards and 11 touchdowns this past season. He’s two years removed from a 65-reception, 1,128-yard performance for the Ravens.

This move has been expected for some time now. Anquan Boldin, who played with Smith in Baltimore up until joining San Francisco in 2013, indicated that a move was going to be made earlier on Tuesday.

With this signing, we can pretty much throw out any idea of Michael Crabtree returning to the 49ers.

It also gives San Francisco a great deep threat opposite Boldin. That’s something Colin Kaepernick has sorely been lacking over the years.
