NFL Could Expand Rosters to 55

In what could be some really good news for fringe NFL players out there, the league’s competition committee is currently considering expanding roster sizes from 53 to 55.

This move would create 64 more jobs around the NFL—a sure sign that the league wants to expand player development. There’s no talk of active game day rosters expanding, which would make this more of an idea to help develop careers.

The NFL Players Association would likely support this move. However, there would be some concern that the average player would see a decrease in salary with a hard cap already in place. A $140 million cap split between 53 players equates to an average salary of $2.641 million. If rosters were to expand to 55, the average salary would then be $2.546 million. That might be a low price to pay to create 64 more jobs.

As it relates to who would likely benefit the most from an increase in roster size, it would have to be young players and un-drafted rookie free agents. This wouldn’t necessarily prolong the careers of veterans.

It also creates the possibility that the NFL might expand the draft from seven rounds to eight or nine. Though, that’s pure conjecture on our part.
