After sending Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham packing in a trade, there was some speculation that the New Orleans Saints might be prepared to blow things up.
That increased when the team also traded Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs and young receiver Kenny Stills.
However, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis shot down rumors that Drew Brees is on the trade block following these flurry of moves.
Anybody who thinks we’re trading Drew Brees, that’s just not true,” Loomis told USA Today Sports.
The issue with even entertaining a trade is that Brees is set to count nearly $54 million against the cap in the next two seasons. The Saints also don’t seem to have a reliable long-term solution behind Brees on the roster.
Brees is coming off a 2014 season that saw him put up 4,000-plus yards for the ninth consecutive season. However, he was intercepted 17 times and led the Saints to a substandard 7-9 record.
If the Saints long-term plans don’t include the 36-year-old Brees, they will likely have to find a quarterback in the draft over the next couple years.
It will be interesting to see what the Saints do here in the coming months. If Marcus Mariota were to fall to the team in the first round, does it pull the trigger? If so, what does that mean for Brees future in New Orleans?
