Kareem Jackson Re-signs with Texans, Sets Cornerback Market

The Houston Texans have been extremely active retaining their own free agents prior to the start of the new league year.

Just hours after netting offensive tackle Derek Newton on a five-year, $26.5 million contract, the Texans pretty much set the free-agent market for cornerbacks.

The team has reportedly re-signed veteran cornerback Kareem Jackson to a four-year, $34 million contract with a whopping $20 million guaranteed.

Jackson, 26, was a first-round pick from Alabama back in the 2010 NFL draft. He has started 71 of a possible 80 games in his career, recording 50 passes defended and 10 interceptions in the process.

According to official Pro Football Focus metrics (subscription required), Jackson graded out as the seventh-best cover corner in the NFL last season. Despite this, he did allow a 60% completion rate, which graded out 42nd among NFL cornerbacks.

If Jackson was able to net $20 million guaranteed before even hitting the open market, it has to indicate that higher-upside options such as Byron Maxwell and Chris Culliver will break the bank even more should they hit the market on Tuesday.

This doesn’t even take into account the possibility that Darrelle Revis could receive a record deal should the Patriots let him test the market.

With Jackson’s deal, it wouldn’t be surprising to see both Culliver and Maxwell receive north of $30 million guaranteed. As it relates to Revis, his guarantees will likely reach even new heights.
